So I really miss Chengdu. It has been a while since I left but I really miss all the people I met, my internship and just the vibe! I wanted to share some of the places I visited during my time and my overall China experience. Apologises this post has been a long time coming…BUT ‘I’m back and I’m better’ *Bryson Tiller voice LOL*

Red Bean Buns!

So I shared an apartment with two other dope girls haha (I had an ensuite bathroom which was amaze) in a great area, close to transportation and close to the bars! Hahaha.
The internship itself was DOPE. I was super nervous the first couple of days but everyone I worked with was so friendly, funny and worked so hard! I worked for US app development company with offices based in Chengdu, I shadowed the head web developer and assisted with the social media presence of the companies apps. I felt very involved, I loved the fact that everyday was a new mission and I loved lunch times.

Selfie’s in Jin Li

Food in Chengdu was amaze! Seriously one thing you can be sure of is you will never go hungry because food is super cheap and super tasty (just be careful of bad oil). I think being in London we get so blinded towards what Chinese food is (like Sweet and Sour Chicken haha) China is so big and each region has their own specialties. In Chengdu it is Sichuan Cuisine which is food with bold flavours and is super spicy haha if you can handle spice you’ll love it. At times I could not handle the Sichuan pepper because they add spice to everything so you could be enjoying some vegetables and BOOM MAJOR spice. Overall, the food is great with so much variety and huge portions at very LOW prices LOL. I could literally eat a full meal for less than 2! (I miss you 7/11)

Strolling through Jin Li

Jin Li (aka the Tibetan area) was one of my favourite places to explore and try different foods. Tibetans have the darkest complexion in China, so they were especially interested in me being darker than them, their reactions were always like WOOOO OMG like super OTT.

Wide and Narrow Alleys

Okay now being black in Chengdu. Well it was what I expected, people wanted to take pictures of me and with me, always being starred at me etc. It was only ever especially frustrating when we were visiting a place and I’m thinking ‘c’mon why do you want a picture of me, we are at the panda base surely a panda is more exciting than a foreigner’ haha BUT I have my trusty friend Christina to always pose with me. Foreigner privilege is dope though, I think Chinese people love to see foreigners at bars or restaurants etc.. cause it makes the place look ‘cool’. Shout out to Helens haha truly favourite bar cheapest drinks food and a dope vibe. Clubbing…was interesting haha.

MY CHINA TIP: Whenever you take pictures with Chinese people try to get a copy yourself haha and be prepared to end up on their WeChat LOL. Literally, I had to make sure I looked decent every time I went out because I knew pictures would be taken with or without my consent.

Exhibit A: LOL walking through the mall with my friend, get stopped for pictures and ended up on his WeChat moments

I’ve grown to love WeChat BTW it is so dope, I understand why it pretty much runs everything in China. Banking, ordering food, shopping like everything and anything can be done through WeChat…WhatsApp please update yourself to WeChat level!.
Overall, my experience in China was amazing (annoying at times yes) but I came back to London inspired by the Chinese work ethic, appreciative and wanting to continue to learn mandarin. China is a massive country and I want to go back and explore more it.
Let me know if there is anything about my experience in China you want to know I feel like this was such a brief overview so let me and submit any questions in the comment section below
