POST #26 WHATS THE CLOUD? #BasicNERD

I spend a lot of my time around techy people and I have a lot I need to learn as a graduate software engineer. So…I wanted to start a #BasicNERD series just to break down some of the concepts the general public may not get. This is helps me understand the technology I am using at work and I can try share the knowledge with you guys!
So instead of a boring tutorial I wanted to make this interesting and pretty much BASIC!

So I’ll explain Cloud Computing simply….and hopefully you get it #BasicNERD

Lets start with googles definition:

Google definition:

Cloud Computing (noun)
The practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

Now that definition may be a bit complex so let me break it down…basically you can upload your files (documents, pictures, videos, music whatever) to a service (which exists in the cloud) and when you need it you download it wherever you are.

Why would you want to upload your files to the cloud? BECAUSE APPLE ONLY GAVE YOU 16GB haha or maybe you just want to access your files from anywhere without the use of risky USB’s.

So simply why is cloud computing dope? its..

  • SCALABLE: Starting your own website or business? or just want to save a couple of files? Services like Dropbox or GoogleDrive or OneDrive are generous with the amount of GB they give you but if you need more scale up (obv. that costs but the cloud is CHEAP)
  • DURABLE: Data centers, USBS, Hard-drives can all be damaged, the cloud is resilient!
  • HIGHLY AVAILABLE access your data anywhere anytime

Large companies now use cloud computing to store and process hundreds of terabytes of data because having a data centre that is vulnerable to for example a thunder storm and then the server goes down DAS BAD YO.

Now the major question everyone has ARE MY NUDES SAFE?
Without getting too technical if you look at the diagram see the lock between your devices and the cloud? The most important thing to do is to HAVE A STRONG PASSWORD. When all the celebrities had there photographs leaked it wasn’t Apples iClouds fault…it was because someone took advantage of weak spots and vulnerabilities in Apples password security system.

ONE TIP: I’ll always remember from my security lesson during my MSc is ‘Make sure your passwords are AT LEAST 10 characters long’ I know we all like basic passwords but the longer the better and include a special characters too. I laughed at my friend who has a ‘?’ in her password but not gonna lie its smart. Hacking your nudes will be a little bit harder if your password had a couple ?? in them no? hahah

Anyway I hope that covered some basics on CLOUD COMPUTING let me know what you thought of this #BasicNERD

“Cloud computing is empowering, as anyone in any part of world with internet connection and a credit card can run and manage applications in the state of the art global data centers; companies leveraging cloud will be able to innovate cheaper and faster.”
