POST #15 Podcasts are my therapy

I have always been one who enjoys debates. I love listening to people talk and express themselves, whether I agree or disagree with their point of view is another story BUT I do love to listen to people talk. So this week I want to share with you a few of my favourite podcasts!

Google definition:

Podcast (noun)
a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or portable media player, typically available as a series, new instalments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.

So…every-person with an iPhone has the Podcast app and just never uses it (you can’t even remove it) but let me tell you, please make use of it. (none iPhone users, soundcloud is the easiest way to listen to podcasts)

Podcasts came into my life at a time when I was super stressed and lonely during the later half of my undergraduate degree in 2013 and since then there has not been a day I go without listening to one, no joke. So, let me introduce to you Serial a radio spin off program from ‘This American Life’. This was not the first podcast I listened to but I think it introduced a whole lot of people into the joy podcasting. Serial is based around the true story of the murder of Hae Min Lee ♡ in 1999 (RIP). I know this is super horrible to say but Sarah Koenig presented the story beautifully, discovering flaws in the case and as a result the case itself is being re-evaluated by the court and everyone on-line has their own opinion to who really did it. If you ever do give it a listen just remember JAY is a LAIR!.

I love podcasts because they are a true uncensored conversation and I feel that peoples opinions on TV are so controlled while podcasting is just a raw expression of whatever you want to say and people will either listen or not, simple.

Here are a few of my favourites:

  • The Read Kid Fury and Crissle ‘Throwing shade and spilling tea’ two unapologetically black dope Beyonce fans, I think that sums them up well. The best part of this podcast for me is ‘The Read’ which in ‘gay’ slang basically means going in on someone kinda. This is my top recommendation for anyone interested into pop-culture and wants a different perspective. I had the opportunity to see them live in London and it was AMAZINGGGG
  • The Brilliant Idiots This was probably the first podcast I ever listened to, I love Charlamagne tha god who is one of the hosts, famously known for being a host on the US radio show the breakfast club. Alongside him is the comedian Andrew Schulz and they are a dope duo, going back and forth on everyone and everything; super dope, super funny and my mum loves the show too.
  • Rantin’ and Ravin’ My favourite podcast I think I have listened to all the episodes trice. I have a new found respect for comedians and the grind they go through to become successful and I just love Yamaneika Saunders. This is a hilarious rant filled podcast with conversations on race, being a comedian, Yamaneika’s age and the two female hosts trying to find a man on Soul Swipe haha.
  • Guys We F#CKED My guilty pleasure the ‘anti-slut shaming podcast’ two female comedians who interview the guys they f#cked pretty much…but it is more than just that, they do have great discussions about sex, relationships and everything in-between. I find their view points interesting…lets just say 😉
  • Ignorant Philosophy I started listening to this podcast just when it first began and it is crazy how it has progressed to where it is now, I think it is the perfect example of being persistent, working hard on your podcast and growing an audience. So yeah…the title says it all, pure ‘Ignorant Philosophy’ with all the laughs in-between, plus they have the funniest introduction and my favourite catch phrase ‘Hit the heart ahhyyy!’

I hope I have at least convinced you to go out and search for a podcast to suit you since all of the podcasts I like might be a bit too rachett. There are podcasts out there for everyone from conversations about Race (Race Wars and Is This Racist?), Mental Hygiene (The Friend Zone), Drag Race (RuPaul: What’s the Tee?) whatever LOL!

Personally, I find listening to podcasts so therapeutic, every week I am super excited for a new episode. Podcasts are my therapy, when I have too many thoughts in my head, over thinking, stressed and heartbroken listening to someone else talk and especially comedians like Yamaneika Saunders instantly make me feel relaxed. Podcasts have also made me realise that the world is full of some many different life stories, perspectives and I just love the open and honest conversations. It is so weird how listening to these people have had such an positive impact in my life, it’s not for everyone but I promise load a podcast onto your phone and your commute to work will not be so boring.

‘I have a million things to talk to you about. All I want in this world is you. I want to see you and talk. I want the two of us to begin everything from the beginning.’ – Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood

Till next week guys,

xo

(Thanks for reading till this far FYI: I even attempted to create my own podcast HERE…It was fun while It lasted ahaha tragic.)
